The Marketing Surgeon

01  ·  who it is for

Who it is for.

One question decides almost everything about your material: who sends you patients. Find your practice below, and what you should make first is usually in the first line.

The practices we work with

Referral driven

Specialist and surgical practices

Orthopaedics, ENT, cardiology, general surgery, oncology. Your patients arrive because another physician sent them, so the one-pager and the LinkedIn profile do more work than any advertisement will.

Patient chosen

Dental and orthodontics

People choose a dentist the way they choose a restaurant: proximity, photographs and reviews. Collateral, social and a site that loads quickly matter here in a way they do not in referral work.

Patient chosen

Med spa and aesthetics

Elective, discretionary and photographed. The brand carries more of the decision than the clinical credentials do, which is uncomfortable to say and true anyway.

Mixed

Primary care and multi-site groups

Several locations, one brand, and a front desk in each one improvising its own version of your letterhead. Templates and a system solve more here than a campaign does.

Referral driven

Physical therapy and rehabilitation

Referral relationships with surgeons and primary care, plus patients who shop on location and availability. Both sets of collateral, and they say different things.

Mixed

Behavioural and mental health

Discretion, tone and clarity about what you treat. Written carefully, because the wrong word on an intake sheet costs you the patient who needed it most.

If your speciality is not listed, it is not an exclusion. The categories above describe how patients arrive rather than what you treat, and almost every practice fits one of the three.

03  ·  the difference

Why the difference matters

A referral-driven practice has a small, named, reachable audience. Forty physicians, their schedulers and a handful of case managers. You could write to all of them by hand in an afternoon. What they need is clarity: what you treat, who to send, how fast you will see them, and what they get back afterwards.

A patient-chosen practice has an audience of thousands who will never meet you before deciding. They compare on photographs, price, proximity and reviews, usually on a phone, usually in under a minute.

The first is a documents problem. The second is a presence problem. Buying the wrong one is the most common and most expensive mistake in practice marketing, and it is generally sold rather than chosen.

  • Referred: one-pager, LinkedIn profile, referral letter, a clear intake path
  • Chosen: photography, site, social, reviews, prices people can find
  • Both: templates the front desk can use, and a brand that survives them
  • We ask where your last twenty patients came from before proposing anything
  • If the honest answer is that you need neither, we will say that too

Not sure which one you are?

Most practices are a mix and guess wrong about the proportions. The consultation exists to answer exactly this, and it costs nothing.
